Grand Trunk Road Recliner Camp Chair Review

I work as a freelancer. The reason I do so is that I enjoy the freedom of being on my own. No overbearing boss, and no confining cubicles. My projects do have deadlines though, and they can be just as stressful as any other work. This is why, after completing a big project, I almost always try to literally get away from it all.
There is range of mountains about 50 miles from my home where I like to go trekking for a couple of days, sometimes more. Often, I go with friends, sometimes it’s just my guide and me. I like the mountains. I feel truly free up there. There are plenty of rivers and streams where I can take a dip. The air is fresh and clean.

Occasionally, I get to see a deer, sometimes a boar. And the nights are nippy. I do have a little problem whenever I’m out there, though. The only things I can find to sit on are trunks of fallen trees, boulders, occasional exposed tree roots, or the ground. These can be hard on your backside. And that’s why if you are going on a primitive camping trip, you shouldn’t forget to bring a chair, a chair like the Grand Trunk Road Recliner Camp Chair.

The recliner camp chair is actually a cross between a hammock and a chair. Chairs normally have legs to stand on. This “chair” does not. Chairs have backrests that are elevated at an angle from the horizontal. This chair does.

On the other hand, hammocks are designed for lying almost flat out. This chair is not. Hammocks are suspended from some solid support. This chair is. This hybrid, though, passes as a chair, perhaps because its lower end does not fully extend to support your feet, and perhaps because it is suspended from a single rope.

Designed for carrying in your backpack while hiking to a remote campsite, the camp chair weighs only 3.5 pounds. It consists of a nylon seat, hanging ropes, and three aluminum tubes. The tubes constitute the frame. Each has four rings fastened to its end, two on each side, with one positioned opposite the other.

The ends of a single strand of rope are tied to the rings on opposite ends of one of the aluminum tubes. Before tying them, however, the rope is inserted into a device that looks like a padlock with shackles on both ends. Another piece of rope is tied to the opposite shackle. This is the rope that is lashed to an upper support.

The tube attached to the padlock-like device, in turn, carries the two other tubes via ropes inserted and tied to their rings. These are perpendicular to the upper tube, and they, for their part, support the nylon seat. Apart from supporting the seat, this pair of tubes can act as handles for support to help you get out of the chair, or, on the other hand, for stability if you want to use it as a swing.

The chair is made of parachute nylon, a durable fabric that is light in weight and resistant to damage. It also has superior tensile strength. It is designed to wrap your back, sides, and upper legs, following their contours as you lean back into it. You can dangle your arms out of the wrap quite comfortably as that area, along with the one where your legs fall out of the seat, is padded. And in case it suddenly rains while still hanging from a tree, there are holes on its bottom for draining.

A footrest that is separate from the seat is included. It is made of the same material as the seat, uses an aluminum tube for hanging, and is attached by a long rope to the top tube that supports the seat.

Although the Grand Trunk Camp Chairs are lightweight, they can easily handle heavyweights. Indeed, they can carry persons weighing up to 250 pounds. And you don’t have to go camping in the mountains to enjoy the chair. You can hang it from any tree in the park, your patio, or your garden. You can even hang it from a beam in your porch or bedroom.
