North Dakota State Park Trails
North Dakota's state parks offer diverse experiences for hikers, ranging from short, half-mile walks on paved trails to vigorous backpacking through badlands scenery. Trail maps are available at the entrance station or the trail heads in each park. Trail maps are also available online for Cross Ranch, Little Missouri, Ft. Stevenson, Lewis & Clark, Lake Sakakawea, Lake Metigoshe and Turtle River. Links can be found on each park's web page.
Horseback riding
Little Missouri, Ft. Ransom, Sully Creek and Ft. Abraham Lincoln allow horseback riding. Little Missouri offers guided trail rides from a private concession. No horse rentals are available at Ft. Ransom, Ft. Abraham Lincoln or Sully Creek, but corrals are available for those bringing in their own horses.
Sully Creek is the southern-most trailhead for the Maah Daah Hey Trail, which stretches from the park through the Little Missouri Grasslands to the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Information on this trail can be found at http://www.fs.fed.us/r1/dakotaprairie/mdhtl.htm.
For more information on horse trails in state parks, visit our Horseback riding page.
Mountain Biking
Except for the Maah Daah Hey Trail, mountain biking is not allowed on horseback riding, hiking or nature trails, unless specifically signed for mountain biking. Turtle River, Ft. Ransom, Indian Hills, Ft. Abraham Lincoln and Lake Metigoshe state parks have established trails and/or areas for mountain biking.
Occasionally, trails may be closed to the public due to concerns about trail damage or visitor safety, particularly after severe rain storms. Public use of trails signed as "closed" is prohibited.
