Indian Hills Resort State Recreation Area Offers it All – From Cabins to Hiking!

Park Overview:

Location

Just 31 miles west of Garrison is the full-service Indian Hills Resort, a state recreation area in North Dakota that is privately owned and operated by the husband-and-wife team of Dale and Kelly Sorge. The resort is situated right next to the bank of Good Bear
Bay on the northern side of the majestic man-made Lake Sakakawea.

To reach Indian Hills from Garrison, take Highway 83 and travel up north, then turn left on ND-1804 until you reach mile marker 204. Finally, drive three miles south on a gravel
road to Indian Hills.

History

Indian Hills Resort sits at the northern bank of Lake Sakakawea, which was named after the Shoshone-Hidatsa woman who served as guide and interpreter during the Lewis-Clark Expedition in the early 1800s. In the 1950s, one of the six main-stem dams, subsequently named Garrison Dam, was built to tame the rising of the river. This created Lake Sakakawea, the third largest man-made reservoir in the entire country. Numerous state parks and recreation areas have been developed around the lake since
then.

Amenities

Services are not insufficient at Indian Hills Resort, where various camping and lodging accommodations are available–from primitive camping grounds, to log cabins, to fully-equipped condo units and lodges. The resort also provides electrical hookups for RV campers and a shower house at the campgrounds. In addition, boaters will find complete facilities, starting with the cement ramp launch, sailboat mooring and boat docks. The area also features a souvenir and convenience store, as well as a restaurant manned by the best cook in town.

Activities

Visitors won’t find themselves bored at Indian Hills, with so many things to do and so much to see. The site is well known as one of the best places to experience boating, but hikers and bikers can also have their own piece of natural heaven here. In addition,

children can bring their pets, as long as they are behaved and looked after, and horseback riders can bring their horses. Camping, of course, is one of the favorite activities at Indian Hills, as well as wildlife viewing.
