Amphitheater Programs
Amphitheater programs are held each Friday and Saturday night throughout the summer, starting at 9:30 p.m. Information is posted on the campground bulletin boards.
2008 Special Events
May 24, 25, & 26 (1-4 p.m.)—SKY DANCE SAKAKAWEA. Kite flying festival for all ages. Fly your own kite. Build your own kite. See kites of all shapes and sizes being flown, including stunt kites (701-463-2661).
May 26—MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY. Free admission to any state park on Memorial Day, in honor of past and present servicemen and women.
June 7 (2 p.m.)—NATIONAL TRAILS DAY. Ranger-guided hike through park’s native prairie. North Dakota bird checklist available. Hike will start at the Guardhouse Interpretive Center.
June 28 & 29 (1– 4 p.m.)—FORT STEVENSON
FRONTIER MILITARY DAYS. Living history demonstrations with military encampment and maneuvers.
Skills and crafts of the Indian Wars period
on display. Visit
the
Fort Stevenson Guardhouse Interpretive Center.
June 29—PARK APPRECIATION DAY. Free admission into Fort Stevenson State Park.
July 4 (At dusk)—JULY 4th CELEBRATION. Fireworks display in the picnic area of the park.
july 18 & 19—NORTH DAKOTA GOVERNOR’S CUP FISHING DERBY. 252 teams competing for the Governor’s Cup 33rd annual championship. Flights go out between 7:00 am and 8:30 am. Weigh-ins begin at 3 pm.
July 19 (9 a.m.-12 pm)—NORTH DAKOTA JUNIOR GOVERNOR’S CUP FISHING DERBY. Open to ages up to 17. Prizes awarded. Only charge is the park entrance fee.
August 2-9—CANDISC BICYCLE TOUR. “Bike the Badlands of Teddy Roosevelt” is a 420-mile loop tour that will encompass the ruggedly picturesque North Dakota Badlands, truly scenic Teddy Roosevelt National Park, pristine Lake Sakakawea and the historic wild west town of Medora, featuring the renowned Medora Musical (1-800-799-4242).
August 23—BEACH PARTY. Garrison Chamber of Commerce Beach Party, live bands and entertainment, fun and food for all ages, 50s, 60s & 70s music. Early ticket sales available (1-800-799-4242).
September 5-6—GARRISON FALL WALLEYE CLASSIC. Maximum 130 teams competing for top prize money (1-800-799-4242).
Interpretive Activities
Weekend interpretive activities, including hikes, campfire programs and Dakota Explorers, are held every weekend during the summer. Information is posted on the campground bulletin boards.
June 20-22 – It’s a Different Language
Friday, June 20
- 9:30 PM – How T’ Talk Trapper. Learn the language at the amphitheater.
Saturday, June 21
- 10:30 AM – Kids in the Guardhouse. Meet in the guardhouse to discover how Lewis and Clark communicated to Native American Tribes they met along their journey.
- 9:30 PM – Who’s Who? Come to the amphitheater to see who was in the Corps of Discovery and what they brought with them.
June 27-29 – Frontier Days
Friday, June 27
- 9:30 PM – Fascinating ND. Come to the amphitheater to learn all the things you never knew about ND.
Saturday, June 28
- 10:30 AM – Kids in the Guardhouse. Come along as we visit the military encampment. Meet at the guardhouse.
- 9:30 PM – Fashion Night. At the amphitheater, see what the frontier military really wore.
July 4-6 – 4th of July Festival
Friday, July 4
- No program: Fireworks at dusk
Saturday, July 5
- 10:30 AM – Kids in the Guardhouse. Join us in the Guardhouse to make 4th of July crafts. Bring your bike because we will have a bike parade, too!
- 9:30 PM – Game Night. Get your family together because it is time to play 4th of July family feud at the amphitheater.
July 11-13 – It’s a Buggy Life
Friday, July 11
- 9:30 PM – Inside an Insect. Join us at the amphitheater to learn what you never knew about insects.
Saturday, July 12
- 10:30 AM – Kids in the Guardhouse. Get your nets ready because it is time for a bug hunt! Meet at the Guardhouse. Equipment supplied.
- 9:30 PM – Race Night. Get your quick shoes on and get ready for some insect entertainment at the amphitheater!
July 18-20 – Hooked on Camping
Friday, July 18
- 9:00 PM – Smarter than the Average Camper? Come to the amphitheater with an appetite!
Saturday, July 19
- 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM –ND Junior Governor’s Cup. Join us at the boat ramp for your chance to win prizes.
- 9:00 PM – Are you Hooked? Let’s take a deeper look at fishing! Meet at the amphitheater.
July 25-27 – Splish Splash: It’s not a bath, it’s my home!

- 9:00 PM – Extraordinary Animals. Come to the amphitheater and take a look at extraordinary animal builders.
Saturday, July 26
- 10:30 AM – Kids in the Guardhouse. What’s in the lake? Find out at the Guardhouse.
- 8:30 PM – Roosevelt Park Zoo guest speaker will tell us all about snakes at the amphitheater!
August 1-3 – Ears, Eyes, and Brain
Friday, August 1
- 8:45 PM – It’s All About Communication. Join us at the amphitheater to see what it takes for animals to communicate!
Saturday, August 2
- 10:30 AM – Kids in the Guardhouse. Meet at the Guardhouse to take an Un-Nature Hike and snap some nature photographs.
- 8:45 PM – Preservation. What Can I Do? Find out at the amphitheater.
August 8-10 – Into the Woods
Friday, August 8
- 8:45 PM – Conservation. Take a look at National and State Parks. Meet at the amphitheater.
Saturday, August 9
- 10:30 AM – Kids in the Guardhouse. Meet at the Guardhouse to go into the woods for some tree exploration.
- 8:45 PM – The Lorax. Come to the amphitheater to see what the Lorax has to say about trees.
August 15-17 – Weather Detectors
Friday, August 15
- 8:30 PM – Always above us, but what are they? Come to the amphitheater to find out!
Saturday, August 16
- 10:30 AM – Kids in the Guardhouse. Cycle over to find out about this cycle. Don’t worry, this activity is not watered down!
- 8:30 PM – Severe Weather. What would you do? Join us at the amphitheater for a game.
