Whats More Important than Clean Water?

Katadyn Base Camp Water Filter (Spring 2010)

I’m rather squeamish about what I put in my body.

I try to face away from the kitchen when I eat out. I’d rather not know if the “chef” is wearing gloves, if the kitchen is clean, or, frankly, if the food preparers look as if they hadn’t bathed for 3 days.

So you can imagine that I’m pretty careful about my water when camping.  You can never assume (at least I never assume) that the water at the campground is potable.  Nor do I trust that which comes from a river (ever read the paper about corporate dumping?).  Yes, I realize my paranoia runs amok. But…what’s the saying…ounces…pounds…cures…you know what I mean.

So, if you’re like me, what are your options?  You can use filters, chemical tablets,  or boil your water. Of course, boiling is time consuming.  Not only do you have to start a fire, and wait for the water to boil, you also have to let it cool.  And tablets can change the taste of water.  Further, they also expire.

So I look to filters.  I’ve been doing a lot of research, and recently came across the Katadyn Base Camp Water Filter.  What I like about it is no pumping required! You hang it up and let gravity do the work.

I’m not against work…part of the fun of “roughing” it is to well…rough it. But if gravity wants to help me get clean water, who am I to complain?
