Buyer’s Guide to Camp Cots
Compared to sleeping bags, camp cots offer more space and comfort but you’ll have to furnish your own blankets. They are, however, heavier to carry and this could be a problem if you’re traveling on foot or if you have little storage space available in your car.
But all these disadvantages aside, if you believe that camping cots are still your ideal sleeping arrangement for outdoor trips then here are a few tips to help you shop for the right one.
Choose something bigger.
If you’re choosing a cot over a sleeping bag then make the most out of your choice by choosing something bigger than your size. This will allow you to sleep more comfortably as you could fit extra pillows next to you if you want.
Choose a cot with a heavy-duty frame.
Always check the product specifications for the maximum weight the cot’s able to carry. If you intend to use the cot with your partner or child, then make sure that your combined weight can still be accommodated.
Also, look for a cot that has a steady or durable frame. It mustn’t wobble or creak too much when you lie on it. If it does, your almost guaranteed to have a poor night’s sleep.
Choose something comfortable.
Camp cots may look extremely comfortable to lie on, especially when compared to sleeping on the bare ground, in a sleeping bag or even on the floor of your tent, but actually, they’re not much different from all those alternatives unless they’re designed with built-in padded mattresses.
Cots with built-in mattresses will cost more and consume more space. If you want, you could use them in combination with a portable air mattress.
Further, coiled systems are also ideal as they prevent the cot from sagging more than usual despite heavy or frequent use.
In addition, consider the texture of your cot. Does it feel good against your skin?
Choose something that’s easy to assemble and disassemble.
With outdoor trips, the best equipment to take with you is that which won’t require much time or effort to assemble or disassemble. Ask for a demonstration on how the cot is assembled. Try it for yourself and if it seems too complicated then maybe it’s time to move on to the next one on your list.
