Take Highway 2 and head west of Grand Forks. Travel about 22 miles and you’ll soon be past the gates of Turtle River State Park.

What to Do in Turtle River State Park

In the years of the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps had built the Turtle River State Park, which is nestled in a picturesque and highly wooded valley. Being open all year long, the park is able to offer a delightful array of outdoor activities for every season.

For younger visitors who are into fishing, fishing gear may be borrowed from the park office. Once you reach the Turtle River, prepare for one of the greatest challenges of your beloved hobby as you try to hook one of the river’s most prized rainbow trout.

There are also trails offered for mountain biking and hiking as well as trails specifically designed for winter use or, more specifically, cross country skiing.

Accommodations

Rates for primitive camping and RV camping with electricity hookups remain the same with other state parks at $12 and $15 respectively. Entrance fees are also the same at $5 per vehicle while annual permits are still at $25 per vehicle.

Those who wish for more luxurious accommodations will not be disappointed by the Woodland lodgings offered at Turtle River State Park.

Woodland Cabins are duplexes rented out at $45 per night. They come equipped with their own comfort and shower areas. 10 units can accommodate up to six persons while 2 other units can only accommodate a maximum of 3 persons but offer wheelchair-accessible facilities.

The Woodland Lodge can accommodate up to 100 persons and offers use of kitchen and dining facilities for large groups. The lodge also has restrooms available as well as wheelchair-accessible facilities. It may be rented for $250 per day.

Other accommodations available for rent are the Chalet, which can seat up to 50 persons, and the Visitor Center Classroom, which can accommodate up to 30 persons.
