Theodore Roosevelt National Park
This is the lone national park in North Dakota, but covering over seventy thousand acres of property, it can offer everything you want from an outdoor adventure. The park offers unrivaled access to the Badlands. The scenery is one of the best in the state, but be warned: most of the rewarding trails require you to travel on foot or on horseback.
It’s also the best place to observe the diverse wildlife of North Dakota, including wild herds of bison, prairie dogs, various species of deer and birds, and elk. North Country National Scenic Trail
Although the trail is undergoing continuous construction, it is expected to be the longest continuous trail for hiking in the country, having connected seven states and treating hikers with evolving landscapes of the north.
Lewis & Clark National Trail
The Lewis & Clark National Trail goes through eleven states and retraces the footsteps of the explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in their historic expedition to the West. They had been accompanied by the Corps of Discovery and a few Native American Indians.
A part of this trail passes through North Dakota and you can access this on foot or on horseback.
Knife River Indian Villages
Enjoy a rare glimpse into the lives of early day Native Americans when you visit the Knife River Indian Villages. Both the Hidatsa and Mandan tribes had lived in earthlodges and their unique and fortified dwellings had been reconstructed to allow visitors a more in-depth understanding of their way of living.
Afterwards, visitors may also enjoy exhibits of the tribes’ finest works of arts, including bags and ceremonial clothing. Visit the Sakakawea Village site next and you’ll be able to participate in village games and witness traditional ceremonies.
Fort Union Trading Post
A fitting end to your tour of North Dakota national parks and historic sites would be a visit to the Fort Union Trading Post. In its peak, it had been the most significant of all trading posts on the Upper Missouri. Today, visitors may enjoy a living history interpretive tour at the reconstructed post and trading house.
