The park boasts of more than 80 miles of horse trails and with the exception of nature trails, picnicking areas, and campgrounds, everything else may be accessed on horseback. For those with their own horse, corrals are available for your ride’s accommodations. For those without, there are horses available for rent as well as options for guided trail horseback excursions.

Backcountry horse camping is permitted but this is most suitable for intermediate and advanced riders. When touring the wilderness regions of the park, be sure to keep an eye on long-horned cattle, bison, and other interesting inhabitants of the park.

Little Missouri State Park

Visit the park at springtime and enjoy a horseback adventure you’ll never forget. The park boasts of six thousand acres of land, most of which may only be accessed on foot or on horseback. Take your horse to any of the trails crisscrossing the state’s popular Badlands regions and if you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of golden eagles, mule deer, and bobcats roaming their territories.

Some of these trails are connected to the Sully Creek State Recreation Area, offering you a chance to visit another vastly beautiful natural park of the state.

Lake Metigoshe State Park

For a more scenic journey on horseback, you should definitely tour the Lake Metigoshe State Park. Hear the waves crashing on the lakeshore, echoing the thuds of your horse’s hooves as you enjoy a speedy, exhilarating ride. But once you reach the gently rolling hills, slow down and let your horse graze as you take in the idyllic beauty of the park.

Nearby, there is also the Turtle Mountain State Forest to explore. Excitement abounds as you take your horse through weaving trails. And after an exhausting day ride, you can enjoy accommodations at the Strawberry Lake.

Sheyenne National Grassland

For those new to horseback riding, the vast and picturesque prairie of the Sheyenne National Grassland offers beginners an easy but thoroughly enjoyable course. As the area is open to non-motorized vehicles as well, do exercise caution and ride at reduced speed to avoid any unnecessary accidents.
