Boating and Camping at Lake Sakakawea State Park

Lake Sakakawea State Park

Lake Sakakawea State Park is home to one of the 3 largest man-made lakes or reservoirs in the country, covering more than 360,000 acres of ground and reaching all the way to Willston as a segment of the Missouri River system.

The History of Lake Sakakawea State Park

During the 1950’s, one of the 6 main-stem dams that had been constructed and supervised by the US Army Corps, the Garrison Dam, had finally been completed. These dams had been built to manage floods as well as irrigation systems, navigation, and hydroelectric power. With the completion of Garrison Dam, the Lake Sakakawea reservoir had been created.

What to Do in Lake Sakakawea State Park

Just travel one mile north past the city of Pick and you’ll be able to access Lake Sakakawea State Park.

Boating is one of the park’s biggest draws. You can either drive your own boat or rent a boat to cruise the lake’s deeper waters and admire the beautiful scenery. In addition, for long-term visitors, there are storage areas available for boats and campers.

A modern campground area is also provided by the state park for its visiting campers. Backpackers need only pay $12 per night while those who wish to hook their RVs or campsites to the campground’s electrical system have to pay only $20 per night. Cabin rentals are also offered at $40 for a night.
