Icelandic State Park

To reach Icelandic State Park, simply take Highway 5, located near the US – Canada borders, and travel 5 miles west past the town of Cavalier. At the Icelandic State Park, you’ll have the opportunity to relive the homesteading experience native to North Dakota life.

What to Do in Icelandic State Park

As with other state parks of North Dakota, the waters of Icelandic State Park is abundant with various species of popular game fish, one of which is the highly sought after northern pike. Once you’ve had your fill of fishing, you could enjoy a relaxing afternoon under the shade of majestic oak trees within the picnic areas of the park.

When darkness falls and you find yourself reluctant to say goodbye to the natural beauty of the park, feel free to take advantage of the modern facilities and amenities offered by the park’s campground.

Even if you spend more than a day at the state park, you won’t lack of things to do. Go back to the river and enjoy endless hours of swimming. You can also cruise the waters of the river with rented boats and let the soothing sound of waves lull you to sleep or find another nice spot for fishing.

If you’re in the mood for ground-based activities, head to the Pioneer Heritage Center to learn about the rich and colorful history of the park. Once there, you’ll also be able to tour beautifully restored historic buildings and enjoy a glimpse of early day life in this part of North Dakota. When you visit Gunlogson Homestead and Nature Preserve, you’ll be able to see for yourself how the state’s pioneers had made their living.

As for naturalists, there are more than 200 acres of untouched woods that serves as home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.

Campground facilities include modern comfort amenities and shower areas as well as hookups for sewage and electricity. Primitive camping rates are at $12 per night while hookups are at $20 per night.
