Shopping for most women is all about finding something that’s not only comfortable to wear but also could make them look their best. That’s still possible when it comes to hiking shoes for women. Just don’t expect the shopping process to be quick and easy. It won’t be!
Looks
This may be bad news for most female hikers but the fact remains that most hiking shoes designed for women are bulky and not at all fashionable. If you prioritize looks over other factors, you’ll be the most fashionable-looking hiker in the area but you could also be the one most prone to having an accident.
So my advice – consider this as your last priority for the sake of your feet. If you want to be fashionable, you can do so with your clothing – lots of opportunities and ways to do that – but not with your footwear.
Price
Women are generally more at ease with shopping than most men. They know how to appreciate good quality and won’t hesitate to pay a huge amount of money for it. That may be considered impractical to some but when it comes to outdoor footwear, this is exactly the ideal attitude to have.
How to Choose Hiking Shoes for Women
When it comes to outdoor trips, it’s very important not to sacrifice comfort and safety just so you can buy something for less. Sure, you’ll save, say, ten or even fifty dollars by buying a cheaper pair of shoes. But in return, you will have left yourself vulnerable to foot injuries and infections that could cost you ten times more in medication and treatment.
Weight
Men are generally used to wearing heavy footwear. It’s practically expected, since they tend to wear sports footwear and boots on numerous occasions. But women are spoiled for choice when it comes to footwear that’s not meant for outdoor use. There are stilettos, sandals, espadrilles, pumps, ballet flats, and a lot, lot more. Most of these are also built not just to provide comfort but also designed to look beautiful on your feet and not make you feel like you’re wearing a ball and chain.
With outdoor footwear for women, however, these choices disappear, especially when it comes to weight. You’re left with options like slightly heavy, moderately heavy, and ultra heavy footwear. Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do about this because the materials commonly used for hiking shoes are naturally heavier than the materials commonly used for other types of women’s footwear.
Also, weight is sometimes proportionate to quality and even durability. When you’re set to go backpacking or mountain climbing for hours, lightweight shoes just won’t cut it. You need something extremely durable and guaranteed not to “break” when you happen to traverse over steep, narrow, and rough surfaces.
Waterproof
Few men mind that they’re going to have slightly wet feet during a trip. But it’s different for women. We need our feet to smell clean and fresh, but also remain comfortably warm and dry even when we’re hiking. So remember then to check for waterproof protection when you go shopping for outdoor footwear.
One Last Reminder: Try Before You Buy!
Hiking shoes for women are generally designed to last a lifetime so be sure you’re buying a pair that you’ll feel comfortable using for a long period of time.
Okay…that’s my advice…hope to see you on the trail…in your new hiking boots!
