Women – not to worry because we’ll discuss your footwear selection in the next post, but for now, let’s concentrate first on the guys. It’s an unfortunate fact that when it comes to hiking shoes, the men are really blessed with more choices. Guys – let’s hope you take advantage of them and don’t just buy your outdoor footwear based on price.
Comfort
When it comes to hiking, comfort should be your #1 priority. There is nothing more important than comfort when you’re hiking or just exploring the outdoors. The thing about the outdoors is that it’s a very unpredictable place as well as an isolated one. Both these qualities mean that you can’t expect to find a convenience store or footwear boutique where you can purchase materials to repair your shoes or buy a spare pair if the ones you’re using have been damaged.
Quality and comfort always go together so if you want a comfortable pair, prepare to spend more than usual. With a comfortable pair of hiking shoes, you can at least be assured of its quality as well – it’s the type that you can walk around in for long periods of time without experiencing pain or, worse, injury to your foot.
If you’ve previous experience hiking, regardless if it’s for a day or overnight tour, you no doubt know that you’ll rarely have the option of resting your feet. If you dally for more than a moment, your group could accidentally leave you behind and you’d have to navigate your way back to safety on your own.
How to Choose Hiking Shoes for Men
If you don’t want to risk getting left behind or experiencing injury because of your footwear then invest in footwear that can give your feet the “royal treatment” while hiking.
Materials
It’s not just a matter of aesthetics. When it comes to choosing footwear based on materials, remember that materials will also affect how comfortable your shoes are. The type of materials used will also determine how much protection your shoe can provide or, more specifically, how effective it is in keeping your feet warm and dry even when you’re backpacking during a rainy day.
Purpose
Exactly what kind of hiking are you going to do anyway? This will matter as well, you see, when you go shopping for footwear. There are hiking shoes, for instance, that are specifically designed for day trips or short-term tours of the outdoors. This type of footwear can keep you safe, comfortable, and mobile when you’re taking nature or walking trails that don’t feature too much uphill and rough climbing.
If you’re going backpacking for the whole weekend then of course you’ll need to find footwear that’s specifically manufactured for that type of activity. With weekend backpacking, you’ll have to carry a modest to heavy amount of gear, and your choice of shoe must support you while you carry that much load. As such, it requires stiffer and thicker soles to stay durable even when you’re trekking on high and rough ground while carrying your gear.
Don’t Forget Break-In Time!
Once you’ve decided on which pair of hiking shoes to purchase, don’t forget to consider “break-in time”. If there is no specific period of time provided with the product description, ask the sales representative about it. If he or she can’t give you the answer you need then contact the product manufacturer or ask your friends about it.
Okay…that’s it. Time to go on a hike!
