How to Choose the Best Camping Spots
Regardless of the type of camping trip you’re planning, the rules for choosing the ideal camping spots remain essentially the same.
Wilderness Camping
If you are traveling on foot and you wish to rough it out as much as possible by resting on the hard ground with only your sleeping bag as cover then the best camping spots are those that are near vegetation and sources of water. Also, check for signs that the area has been marked by territorial and predatory animals. There must be space enough for you to build campfires – if permitted – and to answer “calls of nature”.
Tent Camping in Parks and Campgrounds
In parks and campgrounds that require payment for use of their space and facilities, the most expensive ones generally offer the best camping spots as well. With parks and campgrounds that are free to use, however, the best camping spots are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The best thing you can do is to inquire if reservations are accepted. Ask as well what their peak seasons and hours are so you can reserve the best dates for your trip and arrive well before other campers to have your pick of camping spots.
In most cases, ideal spots in parks and campgrounds are those that are a short distance away from restrooms and other public facilities. This way, you won’t have to travel too far just to go to the restroom, wash used dishes, or prepare your food. It’s also safer if you have children with you as they need not leave your sight when they wish to go to the restroom, swimming pool, or any other recreational area of the park.
For beach campgrounds, make sure you’re aware of expected tide levels. Even if you’re not too close to the shore, high tides could still reach your campsite. Avoid setting up camp near dunes as well.
Recreational Vehicle Camping
If you are bringing your trailer or caravan then you may be required to camp only in hook-up sites to get access to the necessary utilities such as water and electricity. If, however, your trailer can function on its own then choosing the best camping spots is easy: simply look for the site that offers the best scenery but is strategically located near recreational facilities at the same time.
When you have several viable locations in mind, other factors you should consider are space, privacy, and shade as all these could affect the general outcome of your trip!
