Camping Resort Etiquette 101
Due to the essential nature of camping, you are likely to set up camp in close proximity to other campers regardless of how large the camping resort is. As such, there are many things that you’d do which could be considered unwelcomed by other campers. Avoid stepping on anyone’s toes by observing proper camping resort etiquette.
Take the time to read campground rules and regulations thoroughly.
Many campgrounds have semi-permanent and permanent residents and will thus suffer the effects of any mistakes you make on a long-term basis if you ignore campground policies. As majority of such rules are also for your own safety and comfort, it’s best to heed them and do not hesitate to inquire if you find anything confusing.
Be considerate to people who keep regular sleeping hours.
After-dinner hours are the time to be silent and enjoy peace and quiet. Lower the volume of your TV, radio, or computer in deference to nearby campers who are already preparing to go to bed. If you and your group are disinclined to sleep just yet, relocate to an area where none of your noise will reach the main campground.
Drive slowly.
If you are driving within campgrounds, observe speed limits as there are sure to be children playing about and who may not currently under adult supervision.
Do not feed wild animals.
In most cases, feeding wild animals is expressly prohibited but even if you haven’t heard anything to the contrary, it’s best to avoid feeding wild animals all the same unless someone from the campground management says otherwise.
There are various reasons why doing so is forbidden, but mostly this is to reduce chances of animals suffering from any digestive illnesses due to an improper diet and, of course, for your safety as well. You could feed a rabbit today and wake up tomorrow to the sight of a hungry bear expecting the same treatment.
Try to arrive before dark.
This way, you’ll be able to find your designated campsite more easily. But if there’s no way for you to avoid arriving well after dark, please do not use your car’s headlights and honk your horn as this will cause a disturbance to other campers who are already resting. Don’t leave your car engine running idly for more than a minute as its noise could still end up disturbing other campers.
Remember these tips the next time you visit a camping resort and everyone’s sure to love being your neighbor next camp!
