How to Choose the Ideal Pair of Birding Binoculars
Every June, the Devils Lake State Park celebrates the Sullys Hill Birding and Nature Festival. During this time, keen birdwatching aficionados will be able to enjoy delightful sights of their favorite North Dakota birds…especially if they’re using the ideal pair of birding binoculars.
What to Look for in Birding Binoculars
Here are several factors to consider when shopping for your first pair of birding binoculars.
Lightweight
Whether they’re hand-carried or worn with a neck strap, binoculars are still something you’ll have to bear the weight of – and for a considerable amount of time at that – so it’s critical that you find something lightweight. Anything too heavy and you might end up losing the strength to lift the binoculars to your eyes at the most critical time. You may think that’s an exaggeration, but wait until you’ve been looking through binoculars for hours. Your sore muscles are sure to show you the truth.
Tripod-Compatible
If possible, look for binoculars that may be used together with tripods. This way, you won’t have to place too much strain on your muscles as you wait an indefinite amount of time for your favorite birds to come into view.
Also, look for tripods that may be car mounted as well. If your vehicle has a sun roof, this will allow you to use a different and more elevated angle for studying the landscape and spotting your subjects.
Easy Controls
Birding binoculars must not have complex controls. Remember: time is of the essence when you’re bird watching. Take your eyes away from the scenery for a few seconds and you could miss your chance of spotting the Evening Gosbreak or the ever-attractive House Finch.
Test binoculars before buying any model. See if the controls are quick and easy to adjust. More importantly, check if it’s simple to adjust the focus of your binoculars to obtain the optimal view of your subject.
Use with Eyeglasses
Not everyone is fortunately blessed with 20/20 vision or the ability to use contact lenses. Many have to use eyeglasses all the time, but this shouldn’t stop you from enjoying birding. If you are suffering from impaired eyesight of any type, just look for birding binoculars that accommodate the use of eyeglasses while observing.
Shockproof
And of course, don’t forget to look for birding binoculars that come with shockproof casing. So many incidents could cause you to accidentally drop your binoculars and it would be such a waste if your entire trip would be ruined just because your binoculars couldn’t handle the drop.
