Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park is located in the heart of the Northern Great Plains Steppe Ecoregion. Although mixes grass prairie is the predominant natural vegetation of this region, the floodplain forest and upland woody draws and shrublands associated with the Missouri and Heart rivers make up a large portion of the park's natural vegetation.
Several of the park's most significant assets are its intact natural communities. Communities within the park include:
