State/federal trails

North Dakota's wide open spaces and public lands support a variety of recreational trails... from short self-guided nature trails found in many of North Dakota's state parks, to national recognized scenic and historic trails. Here you will find information on major trails within the state. To find out more about other local trails, contact the city or county park districts.

Lewis and Clark Trail—designated by Congress as a National Historic Trail, this 3,700-mile trail runs from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean.

Maah Daah Hey Trail—this 96-mile National Recreation Trail is a premier hiking, biking and horseback riding trail located in North Dakota's western Badlands.

National Recreation Trails—are comprised of 13 North Dakota trails designated by the U.S. Department of Interior as having local and regional significance.

North Country Trail—a National Scenic Trail that, when completed, will run from New York to North Dakota's Lake Sakakawea State Park.
