2008 Special Events

May 26—MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY. Free admission to any state park on Memorial Day, in honor of past and present servicemen and women.

June 15—STATE PARK DAY. Free daily vehicle admission to the park.

June 21—NATIONAL TRAILS DAY. Take a hike on the trails with one of the interpreters, starting at 10 a.m. and again at 2 p.m.  Meet at the Bait Shop.

June 28-29—DEVILS LAKE CHAMBER WALLEYE FISHING TOURNAMENT. 150 teams competing in a two-day tournament.

July 26—ADULT / CHILD FISHING TOURNAMENT. Contact the Lake Region Anglers Association of Devils Lake.

August 9—CABELA’S WALLEYE TOURNAMENT.

August 16—CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST. Come decorate your campsite and win prizes.

 

Interpretive Activities

Weekend interpretive activities, including hikes, campfire programs and Dakota Explorers, are held every weekend during the summer. Information is posted on the campground bulletin boards.

June 27-29 – Making Waves
Saturday, June 28

  • 10:00 AM – Something’s Fishy…  Meet at the picnic shelter by the bait shop to learn about the fish of Devil’s Lake and a little bit of its history and composition.
  • 8:00 PM – Enchanted Waters.  How did Devils Lake get its name? Who is the island named after? Learn the answers to these questions and more at this presentation of Devils Lake’s History. Meet at the picnic shelter near the bait shop.

Sunday, June 29

  • 11:00 AM – Nature Hike.  Meet at the picnic shelter by the bait shop for a hike down the Sivert Center Trail.

July 3-6 – All-American Animals
Thursday, July 3

  • 8:00 PM – It’s a Mystery.  It’s brave, it’s fast, it’s historic, it’s definitely American, and it almost died out.  What animal do we speak of?  Well, you’ll just have to come to the Sivert Center and find out.

Friday, July 4

  • 8:00 PM – Journey into the Past.  Come to the picnic shelter by the bait shop to learn some history of Devils Lake and Grahams Island.

Saturday, July 5

  • 10:00 AM – 4th of July Crafts and Games.  Come celebrate the 4th of July with Graham’s Island staff.  Join is at the picnic shelter by the bait shop.
  • 8:00 PM – All-American Animals.  How many animals are found only in North America?  Actually, quite a lot.  Learn all about them at the Sivert Center. 

July 11-13 – Crazy about Conservation
Friday, July 11

  • 8:00 PM – Wild about Wetlands.  Learn why wetlands are so important.  We’ll examine birds, mimic migration, and watch a short movie at the Sivert Center.

Saturday, July 12

  • 10:00 AM – Special Guest: Alan Gulsvig, Area Soil Scientist for NRCS, will lead a hands-on program on conservation at the picnic shelter by the bait shop.
  • 1:00 PM – Un-Nature Hike.  Something isn’t right in the wild of Graham’s Island.  Come with interpreter Tim and uncover the culprits.  We’ll meet at the picnic shelter by the bait shop.
  • 8:00 PM – Stories of This Good Earth.  Come to the picnic shelter by the bait shop to listen to stories about our planet.

July 18-20 – Kidsfest!

  • 10:00 – Kidsfest!  Come by the Sivert Center for some fun and games.

July 25-27 – CSI: Nature
Friday, July 25

  • 8:00 PM – Creature Criminals!  Learn all about the robbers, liars, and killers of the animal world at the Sivert Center.

Saturday, July 26

  • 10:00 AM – Guest Speaker, Jill Haakenson, RC & D coordinator for NRCS will be leading a program on ND Wildlife at the picnic shelter by the bait shop.
  • 8:00 PM – Tracks and Traces.  Learn to read the signs of nature as you investigate a crime scene.  Meet at the picnic shelter by the bait shop.

August 1-3 – Home Sweet Home
Friday, August 1

  • 8:00 PM – Nature’s Carpenter.  Learn wild facts about beaver and take a hike to our park’s own lodge.  Meet at the picnic shelter by the bait shop.

Saturday, August 2

  • 10:00 AM – Guest Speaker: Curtis W. Bradbury, Area Biologist for the NRCS, will be presenting a program on grassland and wetland habitat at the picnic shelter by the bait shop.
  • 7:30 PM – A Safe Place to Build a Nest.  Learn about bird nests and build a bird house of your own.  Meet at the picnic shelter by the bait shop.

August 8-10 – Lewis and Clark
Friday, August 8

  • 8:00 PM – Storytelling.  Meet at the picnic shelter by the bait shop and hear stories from the Lewis & Clark Trail.

Saturday, August 9

  • 10:00 AM – Nature Journaling.  Come make your very own nature journals at the picnic shelter by the bait shop and use them on a nature hike, just like Lewis and Clark!
  • 8:00 PM – Life and Times of Lewis and Clark.  Join us at the picnic shelter by the bait shop and learn what life was like for the Corps of Discovery.

August 15-17 – Christmas in August!
Friday, August 15

  • 8:00 PM – How’s That Coat of Yours?  Come learn what makes the snow hare so snow-tastic and other fun wintry facts!  At the Sivert Center.

Saturday, August 16

  • All Day – Christmas in August.  Camper decorating and judging, plus more Christmas fun!

Sunday, August 17

  • 11:00 AM – Leaves That Never Die.  Come learn about the tree of Christmas, the evergreen.  At the Sivert Center.

August 22-24 – Peeling Back Time

Saturday, August 23

  • 10:00 AM – Dirt Digging!  Become an archaeologist at the Sivert Center and learn why their job is so fun and important. 
  • 8:00 PM – Archaeology of the Great Plains.  Come to the Sivert Center and learn what archaeologists have discovered about the peoples of the plains.

August 29-31 – Back in the Day…
Friday, August 29

  • 8:00 PM – History.  Learn about the first settlers of Graham’s Island at the picnic shelter by the bait shop.

Saturday, August 30

  • 10:00 AM – Pioneer Crafts.  Make some pioneer crafts at the picnic shelter by the bait shop.
  • 8:00 PM – Pioneer Games.  Come to the picnic shelter by the bait shop and learn some good old pioneer games.

Sunday, August 31

  • 8:00 PM – Pioneer Life.  Learn about the rugged life on the Great Plains at the Sivert Center.

Monday, September 1

  • 10:00 AM – Labor Day Celebration.  Come to the Sivert Center for food, games and a movie.
